In my previous article I discussed how powerful cutting cords can be. A cord is essentially a an energetic highway bridge between you and another person, place, or thing. Cords can be beneficial when they are mutually nourishing, but they can inhibit your process if they put you on the receiving end of emotional/karmic energies that are burdensome and confusing, or if your energy is being extracted through the cord (usually unconsciously on both ends). Guarding our own energy as sacred primes us to know what’s us and what isn’t.
A few years back, my friend Anastasia sent me this exact cord cutting exercise. These are the exact instructional photos she sent me. I believe she learned the exercise from one of her friends in Peru:

This is an exact copy-paste of the steps as Anastasia originally sent them to me, and I believe they were written by her friend:
“The steps:
1. Draw two stick figures and label them with your name (left side) and the other person’s name (right side)
2. Draw an “aura” that looks bright and sunny around each person, focusing on feeling that each aura feels very healthy, bright, and vibrant.
3. Connect the 7 chakras of each person together, starting with the root at the bottom and working your way up.
4. State to this person, speaking as if they are in person with you, that you thank them deeply from your heart for the lessons they have taught you, and that it is time to let go of them forever.
5. Finish you short speech by saying you wish them all of the highest of good from our Creator, and pray that they get what they need. Then say, Thank You, and Goodbye.
6. Fold the piece of paper in half vertically so that you are folding to split the 7 chakra connections.
7. Rip the paper in half, essentially cutting you away from that person and releasing them from your karma, energy field, and all attachments.
8. Rip the papers into tiny pieces, and then dispose of them in the trash, or a toilet, or burn them.
9. Meditate for a short time and think about how you feel. How much lighter do I feel now? Do I feel as if I’ve let go of something? Can I now feel how much beauty I am able to receive now that this person’s energy is not glued to me?”
The first time I did a cord cutting exercise, the subject was an ex boyfriend. I felt a heavy energy of his depression immediately slough off of my being, and my emotions felt instantly lighter.
Other times when I have done the cord cutting exercise, if their energy was particularly toxic for me, I may have a physically putative (retching or vomiting) reaction. This has happened to me MANY times in this exercise (but don’t be afraid!) The first time the purgative reaction happened to me, I cut a cord with somebody that she and I both knew from our time in Peru. She did not know that I was doing the exercise, but she was in the US while I was in Mexico at the time. As soon as I did the exercise, she texted me, “What did you just do? It was powerful!” That’s how strong and real this stuff is.
When in doubt, cut the cord! The cord cutting exercise will only remove energies that are not meant for you, and if a cord is meant to remain intact for beneficial reasons, the cord cutting exercise will not impede your ability to have an energetic exchange with that person.
